Aging, Retiring Population = Growth Opportunity for Hospitals

Baby boomers are getting older and retiring, with the final generation of them turning 65 by 2030. When this happens, there is a real possibility of a smaller hospital workforce serving a larger population with greater than usual healthcare needs. photo of a stethoscope lying on top of a graph representing growth

St. Louis-based Mercy is preparing by increasing digital and home care services to provide more care with a smaller workforce. In addition to their digital expansion, the system is publicizing their digital services. In addition, Mercy is expanding its hospital at home service.

John Mohart, MD, president of Mercy communities, who leads operations for all Mercy hospitals, said, "When delivered appropriately … we know the home supports the lowest cost, highest quality and safest care. We also know capacity constraints and staffing challenges across the U.S. demand a new way of thinking about hospital care."

Grady Health System in Atlanta is following a similar path of expanding its service presence in the community. The system’s mantra has become “access, access, access.” Such access includes seven neighborhood health centers, a behavioral health facility and a new standalone ER in south Fulton County. The only full-service hospital with an ER in South Fulton closed two years ago, and the area has been without emergency services since that time.

How is your organization preparing for the influx of older patients in the next few years?
