Effect of Social Media Usage on Gen Z: Negatives and Positives

A new report from LG Electronics looked at how Gen Z respondents say they are affected by using social media. While the report confirmed results from academic studies showing negative effects of social media, it also found positives as well.

Negative effects reported by the respondents included:

  • A negative effect on mental health (75% of respondents)
  • Negative emotions (49%)
  • Stress or anxiety (30%)
  • A desire to retune social media feeds and start over (62%)
  • Frustration that their feed content doesn’t equate to what they want to see (53%)
  • Belief that their control over their social media feeds is minimal to nonexistent (54%)

Positive effects of social media included:

  • Positive impact on mood (80%)
  • Turning a bad day into a good one from something seen on social media (65%)
  • A belief that social media can improve mental health over the next five years (38%)
