An Emotional Intelligence Playlist for Healthcare Communicators

This article was written by Rich Bracken, who will be a featured keynote speaker at the 30th Annual Healthcare Internet Conference (HCIC) October 25-28, 2026 in Orlando, Florida.

I spent more than two decades as a national and international touring DJ before I became a keynote speaker and a brand ambassador for TalentSmartEQ, the No. 1 emotional intelligence research and training company in the world.

What I learned in those years as a DJ shaped everything about how I teach emotional intelligence today. Music can bypass our defenses, shifts our state of mind and creates connection before words are spoken.

This October, I’m excited to be the keynote speaker at #HCIC26. My presentation is focused on how emotional intelligence is one of the strongest predictors of success in leadership, communication and relationships. And I’ll be playing a few of my favorite songs to illustrate these points. Want a sneak peek? Check out this playlist and follow along to the “why” behind each selected song.

SECTION 1: SELF-AWARENESS

Knowing what you feel, why you feel it and how it drives your behavior.

1. "The Man in the Mirror" — Michael Jackson The ultimate self-awareness anthem. Change starts with an honest look inward — Jackson's message is that transformation begins with recognizing your own role in the world around you.

2. "Unwritten" — Natasha Bedingfield About the power of owning your story before it's fully written. Self-awareness means understanding you're the author of your own narrative, not a passenger in it.

3. "Who I Am" — Jessica Andrews A grounded, clear-eyed declaration of personal identity — values, roots, and all. Self-awareness isn't just knowing your weaknesses; it's knowing what anchors you.

4. "Human" — The Killers "Are we human, or are we dancer?" — the tension between authenticity and performing for others. A perfect prompt for asking: am I acting from who I am, or who I think I should be?

5. "Brave" — Sara Bareilles Self-awareness requires honesty — especially the courage to say what you actually think and feel. This song is about what happens when you stop hiding from yourself and others.

6. "Lost" — Coldplay Sometimes self-awareness begins in disorientation. This song captures the feeling of not knowing where you are emotionally — which is often the first honest step toward knowing yourself better.

7. "Reflection" — Christina Aguilera (Mulan soundtrack) Literally about the gap between who you show the world and who you actually are. The central EQ question: which one is the real you?

SECTION 2: SELF-MANAGEMENT

Managing your emotions, impulses and behaviors — especially under pressure.

8. "Keep Your Head Up" — Ben Howard A quiet, steady reminder to regulate your emotional state even when circumstances are hard. Self-management isn't suppression — it's choosing how you respond.

9. "Don't Stop Me Now" — Queen High energy, forward momentum, joy as a chosen state. Self-management includes the ability to channel positive emotion intentionally — not just controlling the negative.

10. "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" — Kelly Clarkson Resilience is a cornerstone of self-management. This song frames adversity as fuel rather than damage — exactly the mindset of someone with high EQ under pressure.

11. "Let It Go" — Idina Menzel (Frozen) Releasing the need to control everything — a key self-management lesson. High EQ means knowing when holding on is hurting you more than letting go.

12. "Fight Song" — Rachel Platten About reclaiming agency when you've been knocked down. Self-management means not letting your emotional state be dictated entirely by your circumstances.

13. "Breathe (2 AM)" — Anna Nalick "Just breathe" — practically a self-regulation instruction manual. The song captures the overwhelm of emotional flooding and the discipline of slowing down before reacting.

14. "Eye of the Tiger" — Survivor Discipline, focus, and emotional drive channeled toward a goal. The EQ angle: sustained high performance requires managing your internal state over time, not just in a single moment.

SECTION 3: SOCIAL AWARENESS

Reading the room, understanding others' emotions and practicing empathy.

15. "What's Going On" — Marvin Gaye One of the most socially aware songs ever recorded. Gaye looked at the world around him — war, poverty, injustice — and asked the fundamental empathy question: what is actually happening to the people around me?

16. "Everybody Hurts" — R.E.M. A masterclass in normalizing pain and making others feel seen. Social awareness means recognizing that the people around you are carrying something — even when it's invisible.

17. "Fast Car" — Tracy Chapman A window into someone else's world — struggle, hope, and quiet desperation. Social awareness requires the willingness to truly listen to lives different from your own.

18. "The Climb" — Miley Cyrus Understanding that everyone is in the middle of their own journey, not just you. Social awareness means seeing the effort behind other people's progress, not just their outcomes.

19. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" — Simon & Garfunkel Pure empathy in song form. The offer to be a steady presence for someone who is struggling is exactly what high social awareness looks like in action.

20. "Count on Me" — Bruno Mars Social awareness isn't passive — it leads to presence. This song is about recognizing what someone needs and showing up for it without being asked.

21. "Try a Little Tenderness" — Otis Redding An appeal to recognize the emotional weight others carry in silence. Reading what's unspoken is the highest form of social awareness — and Redding captures it perfectly.

SECTION 4: RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Using your EQ to communicate, inspire, influence and navigate conflict.

22. "Lean on Me" — Bill Withers The gold standard for relationship management — mutual support, vulnerability, and showing up without ego. The foundation of every strong relationship, personal or professional.

23. "Say What You Need to Say" — John Mayer Relationship management breaks down when people stay silent. This song is a direct call to have the honest conversations that actually move relationships forward.

24. "With a Little Help from My Friends" — The Beatles Collaboration and interdependence — core to relationship management. No one succeeds alone, and this song is a joyful reminder of what's possible when people lean into each other.

25. "Sorry" — Justin Bieber Accountability is one of the hardest relationship management skills. Knowing when and how to apologize — genuinely, not defensively — is what separates relationships that grow from ones that stall.

26. "We Are Family" — Sister Sledge Team cohesion, belonging, and collective identity. In leadership contexts especially, relationship management means building a culture where people feel genuinely connected.

27. "Titanium" — David Guetta ft. Sia Navigating conflict and criticism without shutting down or lashing out. Relationship management requires the ability to stay open and engaged even when you're under fire.

28. "You've Got a Friend" — James Taylor Consistency, loyalty, and emotional safety — the bedrock of lasting relationships. The highest form of relationship management is creating an environment where people know they can count on you.
